A homoeopathic paediatrician, a counselling expert and a freelance writer are a few words to describe my profession. My sole aim is to put forth practical piece of information that guides every one right in the direction, blending the medicos to a layman with a simple gesture to make the medical things a little less convoluted and comprehendible.
Consuming alcohol is considered quite happening and is a trend within the society. Often alcoholics in order to satisfy or let’s say justify their drinking promote consumption advocating its soothing effect on the nervous system and protection from heart attacks. But these all are not true. Mental issues leave no one aloof they come in one form or the other and taking an alcoholic shoulder is no solution. The intoxication just gives a temporary kick and makes one insensitive for a while decreasing one’s mental capacity to understand and face the scenario. Long term excessive consumption of alcohol can lead to many physical, emotional, personal and social financial solutions.
Apart from the above alcohol have direct effects on liver interfering its functions and pathology. Increased risk of hepatic cancer, fatty liver, cirrhosis of liver, alcoholic hepatitis is a few areas that can develop in an alcoholic. Fatty liver is the commonest and found in almost 80 % of binge and hey drinkers, those who remain inattentive and continue indulgence often progress to alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis of liver.
Fatty liver: normally 3 to 8 % of the entire liver comprises of fat and when it surpass the 10 % mark then it is termed as fatty liver. With extreme regenerating power within the liver the situation can be reversed and brought to normal.
Alcoholic hepatitis: if a person continues indulgence despite of a fatty liver then progresses to alcoholic hepatitis. This one too can be reversed with care and absolute restriction of alcohol. Here a patient often reports of deranged liver functions surfacing in form of lack of appetite, jaundice, fatigue etc. From here recovery is possible if one desires so but if one doesn’t stop then complicated irreversible forms are bound to appear / surface.
Cirrhosis of liver: as the liver damage is progressing with consistent alcohol intake, soon the healthy tissue replaces with scar tissue and fine nodules. With these pathological changes liver shrinks in size ad tend to become hard. After maths corresponds to the liver damage and recovery will be partial. Loss of appetite, yellow discoloration of the skin and mucosa with increasing weakness, tiredness, weight loss, pain in the right side of the abdomen and fatigue mark the clinical disease. Sometimes cirrhosis patients may remain stable for years with care, treatment and no alcohol in their lifestyles.
What to do?
The foremost step towards any liver disease is to adopt absolute abstinence from alcohol, if unavoidable one should always limit consumption and should accept only seldom. A healthy lifestyle full of nutrients away from the alcoholic cycle is the key to respond to the liver diseases. Liver in itself has quite a regeneration power and a little help of the patient can help regain the lost. Those who continue drinking complications are bound to happen and the last liver failure needs a complicated version of treatment like liver transplant and people with cancerous inclination can’t even escape with a transplant too as secondary affections can’t be ignored in cancerous issues.
